Scam warning: Criminals attempt to collect unpaid toll bills
IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Scammers are using text messages to collect phony fines for express lanes on Interstate 77 in the Charlotte area, deputies say. The Iredell County Sheriff's Office posted on Facebook that it has received numerous reports about people receiving text messages from someone claiming to be "NCQUICKPASSTOLLSERVICES.COM." The message advises the person to avoid hefty fines by clicking a link and entering their personal information.

Charlotte has made significant strides in improving economic mobility for its low-income residents, according to data from a national study released Thursday. The report, Changing Opportunity: Sociological Mechanisms Underlying Growing Class Gaps and Shrinking Race Gaps in Economic Mobility, is a 10-year follow-up to a 2014 report that placed Charlotte dead last among 50 major U.S. cities in terms of economic mobility. Both studies were led by Harvard University professor and economist Raj Chetty of Opportunity Insights.
