Voters to choose Republican nominee for Charleston County sheriff Tuesday

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- Voters in Charleston County will head back to the polls Tuesday to have the final say of who should be the Republican nominee for sheriff.

Retired Marine Corps Col. Greg Kitchens finished just over 600 votes ahead of former Mount Pleasant Police Department Chief Carl Ritchie in the June 11 primary.

Polls for the runoff election will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Any voter, including those who did not participate in the June 11 primary, can cast a ballot in the runoff. Those who voted in the Democratic primary are not eligible.

The Alhambra Hall voting precinct will be moved to Miram Brown Community Center (118 Royall Avenue, Mt. Pleasant) for the runoff election, officials said.

Additionally, the Mount Pleasant National Guard Armory precinct, which serves voters in Mt. Pleasant 3, Mt. Pleasant 15, and Mt. Pleasant 16, will be moved to the Town of Mount Pleasant Municipal Complex (100 Ann Edwards Lane) for the runoff.

Charleston County election officials said just 2,486 ballots were cast during the early voting period, from June 19 through June 21, with Mount Pleasant precincts reporting the highest turnout.

The winner will face incumbent Sheriff Kristin Graziano, a Democrat, in November’s general election.
