MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD)- Two dozen dogs seized by the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) this week were found chained outside a Mount Pleasant home, deputies said Friday.

According to CCSO, Animal Control Unit deputies conducted a welfare check on dogs at a home in the 2700 block of Rifle Range Road on Wednesday after receiving calls from concerned individuals.

Deputies reportedly found the dogs in a wooded area behind the home, chained in “unlivable conditions.”

Authorities said the animals — 22 beagles and one walker coonhound — were seized on Thursday.

The dogs are now undergoing medical examinations at Charleston Animal Society.

After initially receiving the dogs, professionals discovered that one of the beagles was paralyzed in its back leg. Aldwin Roman, Vice President and COO of the Charleston Animal Society said one officer told employees that the dog was found dragging its back leg through dirt and trash during the seizure.

No charges have been filed at this time.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 843-202-1700.
