On Friday, August 9th, the new storefront for The Broncy Donkey Leather Company was abuzz with excitement, as friends and family packed the store before heading outside for the official ribbon cutting ceremony.
The Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce President Richard Bonney expressed glowing words before the ribbon cutting, “This is one of our favorite things to do as a chamber community. It’s quick and short, but it just really represents all the hard work, sacrifice, and vision to get to this point. We’re here to celebrate with you. We’re excited for you. This means the world to us. We’re here to support the chamber family.”
Store owner, Caroline Ayers, explained how the business started, “Our actual shop was in Queen City and we’ve been in business for five years. I had a business partner for the first four years. Long story short, there are ladies who need a job, but it can be hard when it’s out of town or they need flexibility to pick up kids from school or if their kids are sick, they want to be free to get them. So within a few months, we had a plan rolling. We had three or four of the moms working and learning to sew shoes. And it just kind of grew from there.”
Ayers said they went to the national rodeo in Vegas every year and had a huge show of their products. They’d also have shows in Abilene, as well as pop-ups around Texas. Ayers then went on to say that her business partner, Misty, was diagnosed with Lyme disease and had to bow out of the business. That’s when The Broncy Donkey moved to Mount Pleasant.
“We started with just two people. Now we have 11,” Ayers said with a smile. “I’m super excited. A storefront has been a dream of ours for a long time. We just haven’t had the space. So, it all worked out. We’re excited to be able to be a part of the community on a deeper level and we have a lot of big shows coming up.”
The Broncy Donkey Leather Company is known for their handmade shoes and moccasins, but also on the racks in their store are clothing items, jewelry, and many accessories. The new store is located at 109 W. 3rd Street in Mount Pleasant/
