It might have been a rainy day, but that didn’t stop a number of local business owners from gathering at Laura’s Cheesecake in Mount Pleasant on September 11 for the Main Street meet n’ greet.

Jay Yancey, Vice president of Guaranty Bank and the president of Main Street explained what exactly it means to be a part of ‘Main Street’, “It’s about helping the communities downtown. We want our main street district to thrive. We want all the buildings to look nice and we want the businesses to be successful. We’re very eager to help revitalize downtown, grow downtown, get more businesses, get more people. I love the people that are living down here.”

At the meet n’ greet, Laura’s Cheesecake provided– of course– cheesecake, but they also welcomed business owners with fresh fruit, a nacho plate, and sandwich sliders. Main Street and Events Coordinator for the City of Mount Pleasant, Claribel Banda spoke to business owners during the meeting about what is provided if they join Main Street. She explained that Main Street can assist with a number of resources, including a grant to help jumpstart a business.

Sheila Donnelly, president of American National Bank in Mount Pleasant, added, “There’s a lot of new business owners downtown and we just want to make they know the resources available, like the grant we talked about. A lot of people don’t know there’s assistance if they need help with the sign and stuff like that. They just have to pick up the phone and call.”

Mains Street and the City of Mount Pleasant already have many events planned to bolster life in the downtown area. The farmer’s market has been picking up since it began again this summer and the wine festival will also be returning to the square.
