Whether your property is large or small, a sprinkler system is an efficient way to make sure your yard gets what it needs. If you are thinking about installing a new irrigation system or giving your current system a post-winter tune-up, there are many reasons to hire a trained and licensed professional to take on your irrigation project this spring.

“From designing the right layout to determining the amount of water pressure and gallons needed per minute, making sure each part of your property gets the right amount of water requires special expertise,” Mechele Agbayani Mills, President and CEO of BBB Central East Texas said. “Hiring a licensed professional will save you time and money and effort in the long run.”

Consider the following when hiring an irrigation specialist for installations or repairs:

Research and gather information. Spend your money wisely. Always do your homework by going to bbb.org to review a company’s BBB profile before you hire them. To find a professional irrigation specialist near you go to bbb.org.

Have a clear scope of work before asking for estimates.

This includes defining the area to work on and what you want to be done. When getting bids, don’t compare apples with oranges. Make sure that each business has included the same services. Also, be sure that each business breaks the cost down similarly (per visit, month, year, etc...).

Ask for references and pictures of other jobs they installed or maintained. Ask the landscaper to provide references from previous clients. If possible, visit these locations to get a firsthand view of the quality of their work. Ask the references about their experiences with the landscaper’s services, professionalism, and the quality of work performed. Also, inquire about the landscaper’s expertise and experience. Ask about their training, qualifications, and any other certifications related to landscaping or horticulture.

Make sure they are licensed. In Texas, irrigation installation professionals are required to have a license with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

Get everything in writing and read all agreements and contracts carefully. Make sure the contract contains all topics discussed and promises made. Document the duration and expected results of the lawn care service. Some consumers are unaware that contracts can be open-ended, meaning they renew until the client specifically terminates. Understand guarantees and refund policies. Some services may offer a guarantee of performance. Others may offer refunds if they fail to meet your expectations. Get copies of anything you sign.

Ask about timing and safety. Will the work be done while you are home or away? Are there safety precautions you need to take during or after work?

By following these tips, you’ll better understand qualifications, services, and approach to your irrigation needs.
