It was a sunny day on Saturday, July 13th, as residents got to check out the first Mount Pleasant Main Street Farmers Market, hosted in downtown Mount Pleasant. Fifteen vendors were set up on the square to sell fresh produce, handmade arts and crafts, baked goods, food, and drinks.
Event coordinator for the City of Mount Pleasant, Claribel Banda, said, “I think the last time this had been done was in 2019. Recently, I had just come back from a conference and everyone was talking about their events. I thought, you know what? We need to put something on the map. So I presented the farmers market idea to our board and they said ‘let’s go for it’.” Banda explained that things happened quickly, from pitching the idea a little over a month ago, to making the calls and chatting with vendors.
“Fifteen vendors might be small, but it’s a good start,” Banda said with a smile. “Hopefully from here, it can grow. We’re hoping to continue this monthly.”
Among the shops set up on Saturday was the Swartz Family Farm, Manna, Stara Luna Designs, Proverbs Kitchen, and 5 Y Farms.
Banda encouraged everyone to come out to the next farmers market, “Just come help support your local farmers and crafters. That’s what it’s about. We’re super excited to have everyone. Even if there’s rain, that’s not gonna hold us back.”
