Newton Splash Pad Open Through Labor Day
The Newton Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce the Newton Splash Pad is open for the 2024 season. The splash pad will operate through Labor Day from 1 to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. After Labor Day, operations will be dependent on daily temperatures.

William Allen “Bill” Ketchie, 80, of Statesville, N.C., died Thursday, July 11, 2024, at his home. He was born in Iredell County on March 5, 1944, to the late Hubert Lee Ketchie and Beulah Griffith Ketchie. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Beck Ketchie; two brothers, Herman Ketchie and Edd Ray Ketchie; and a sister, Pat Dowell.

David Hugh Land, 75, of Stony Point, passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia, following a brief illness. He was born in Alexander County on March 31, 1948, to the late Eli Land and Marie Adams Land. He worked in construction as a plumber and was of the Baptist faith.

Eula “Mae” Childers Sawyer, 88, of Catawba, N.C., died at her home on Monday, July 15, 2024. She was born in Gaffney, S.C. on August 4, 1935, and was a daughter of the late John Washington Childers and Ellie Evelyn Spencer Childers. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George M. Sawyer, whom she shared 30 years of marriage and children with.

Native to the southern Appalachian Mountains, the sourwood tree brings a distinct twist to this hometown honey fest. Trees at higher elevations tend to produce the best nectar flow, making sourwoods a popular source for honeybees in North Carolina’s mountains. The nectar bees pull from its white clusters of blooms result in a delicately tart, caramel-like honey that’s a little bit richer than most. The Sourwood Honey Festival has been running since 1977 and it’s the place to be to sample this unique variety. Aside from the honey, festivities will include booths with makers and artisans, live music, and kid-friendly activities.
Traffic stop of alleged roadway stalker ends in chaotic arrest
