David Hugh Land, 75, of Stony Point, passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia, following a brief illness. He was born in Alexander County on March 31, 1948, to the late Eli Land and Marie Adams Land. He worked in construction as a plumber and was of the Baptist faith.

Native to the southern Appalachian Mountains, the sourwood tree brings a distinct twist to this hometown honey fest. Trees at higher elevations tend to produce the best nectar flow, making sourwoods a popular source for honeybees in North Carolina’s mountains. The nectar bees pull from its white clusters of blooms result in a delicately tart, caramel-like honey that’s a little bit richer than most. The Sourwood Honey Festival has been running since 1977 and it’s the place to be to sample this unique variety. Aside from the honey, festivities will include booths with makers and artisans, live music, and kid-friendly activities.

Eula “Mae” Childers Sawyer, 88, of Catawba, N.C., died at her home on Monday, July 15, 2024. She was born in Gaffney, S.C. on August 4, 1935, and was a daughter of the late John Washington Childers and Ellie Evelyn Spencer Childers. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George M. Sawyer, whom she shared 30 years of marriage and children with.
Traffic stop of alleged roadway stalker ends in chaotic arrest
WADESBORO — A Concord man made the mistake of trying to go toe-to-toe with an Anson County Sheriff’s Office deputy during a traffic stop last Monday. For the second time in three years, Northwest Cabarrus boys golfer Talan Harrison has qualified for the prestigious U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.
