Mr. Jackie McCumbers, Soperton
Mr. Jackie McCumbers, age 76, of Soperton, died Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at his home, after a sudden illness. He was born in St. Augustine, Florida on December 25, 1947 to the late Charlie Bernice McCumbers and Lois Ruth Lawrence McCumbers. While in high school, he was a talented athlete, ran track, and played football. He moved to Lyons in 1957 and lived in Soperton most of his life. He retired after thirty years as a machine mechanic from General Fibers Fabrics in Soperton. He attended Trinity Assembly of God, and he enjoyed fishing and swimming. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Vickie Marie Lawrence McCumbers; and six siblings, Charles McCumbers, Virginia McCumbers Fields, Charles Eugene McCumbers, Carolyn McCumbers Crews, Betty Jo McCumbers Thompson, & Wayne McCumbers.

Derden speaks to Four Rivers Patriots
The Four Rivers Patriots, Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution, held its monthly meeting Thursday night, June 20, at Chatters Restaurant in Lyons at 6 p.m. With President Steve DeWeil presiding, they had 16 in attendance. After the invocation by Chaplain Emory Fennell and the Pledge to the U.S. Flag and the Pledge to the Sons of the American Revolution, President Steve called on dual member Dess Smith III to introduce the speaker for the evening. Compatriot Dess introduced Compatriot John Derden to present his program on "Frederica, not one man Hurt". John is a member of the Wiregrass Chapter in Swainsboro and is retired from East Georgia State College where he was the History Professor. After John's presentation, President Steve and the chapter talked about finding all the Revolutionary War Patriots graves that are buried in Toombs and Montgomery counties. After several other items were discussed, President Steve then called on Chaplain Emory Fennell to say the benediction and led the Sons of the Revolution Recessional.

Memorial services will be Wednesday, July 10, at 6 p.m. in the Chapel of Chapman Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Hardin and Rev. Larry Perkins officiating. Mrs. Nelda Beckum Garrett, age 81, of Lyons, died Sunday, July 7, 2024, at Community Hospice House in Vidalia after a sudden illness. She was born in Tennille, Georgia, moved to Toombs County as a child, and was a 1960 graduate of Vidalia High School. Nelda was a legal secretary for fifty years working for T. Ross Sharpe, Malone Sharpe, Wendell Calhoun, Tommy Smith, and several other law firms. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lyons and the Senior Ladies Sunday school class. She was also a member of the Lyons Chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She enjoyed flowers, reading and cooking. She is preceded in death by her parents, Louie Beckum and Pearl Logan Beckum; and two brothers, Wayne Beckum and wife Jeannine and Jerry Beckum and wife Margie.

Mr. Danny Lee McCarty, Cedar Crossing
Mr. Danny Lee McCarty, age 63, of Cedar Crossing, died Sunday, July 7, 2024, at the Community Hospice House in Vidalia, following an extended illness. He was a native of Toombs County, living in Cedar Crossing all of his life, and he attended Toombs Central School. He was a self-employed carpenter and owner/operator truck driver. He attended Bethel-The Church of God in Cedar Crossing. He was a gifted mechanic and had great memory for literature. He enjoyed fishing, camping, tinkering, and reading his Bible. His greatest joy in life and his biggest accomplishment in life was his daughter. He is preceded in death by his father, Jack McCarty; his mother, Cassie Mae Willis Turner; one sister, Katrina Willis; and three brothers, Charlie Turner, Timmy McCarty, and Victor McCarty.

Ms. Lucille H. Seidel, age 89, of Vidalia, died Friday, July 5, 2024, at The Oaks Bethany Home in Vidalia, after an extended illness. A native of Vidalia and living most of her life in Toombs County, she graduated from Lyons High School in 1953. She was the first cheerleader to attend all four years of high school. She owned Southeastern DUI School where she was a substance abuse counselor for many years. She was a member of the Red Hat Ladies and attended Lyons First United Methodist Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Hutcheson and Levata Rowland Hutcheson; sisters, Uldine Sasser and Corine Higgs; two nieces, Judy Sharpton and Katrina Krupar; and a nephew, Tim Higgs.

Deacon A. C. McKever was born July 16, 1944, in Hazlehurst to the late Mr. K. C. McKever and the late Mrs. Dessie M. Arnold McKever. He departed this life April 22 at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas after an extended illness. He was preceded in death by sisters Effie Howard, Vera McKever, Emma McKever, and brother Ellis McKever.
