Hospital stay — By Tommy Purser
I had another memorable stay at Jeff Davis Hospital last week as Dr. Jason Laney was a concerned that I had become dehydrated, a matter that needed attention. His nurse, Ashley, gave me two options. I could have some fluids injected into my system on an out-patient basis or I could have it done while hospitalized.
Ms. Lucille H. Seidel, Vidalia
Ms. Lucille H. Seidel, age 89, of Vidalia, died Friday, July 5, 2024, at The Oaks Bethany Home in Vidalia, after an extended illness. A native of Vidalia and living most of her life in Toombs County, she graduated from Lyons High School in 1953. She was the first cheerleader to attend all four years of high school. She owned Southeastern DUI School where she was a substance abuse counselor for many years. She was a member of the Red Hat Ladies and attended Lyons First United Methodist Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Hutcheson and Levata Rowland Hutcheson; sisters, Uldine Sasser and Corine Higgs; two nieces, Judy Sharpton and Katrina Krupar; and a nephew, Tim Higgs.

Mr. Danny Lee McCarty, Cedar Crossing
Mr. Danny Lee McCarty, age 63, of Cedar Crossing, died Sunday, July 7, 2024, at the Community Hospice House in Vidalia, following an extended illness. He was a native of Toombs County, living in Cedar Crossing all of his life, and he attended Toombs Central School. He was a self-employed carpenter and owner/operator truck driver. He attended Bethel-The Church of God in Cedar Crossing. He was a gifted mechanic and had great memory for literature. He enjoyed fishing, camping, tinkering, and reading his Bible. His greatest joy in life and his biggest accomplishment in life was his daughter. He is preceded in death by his father, Jack McCarty; his mother, Cassie Mae Willis Turner; one sister, Katrina Willis; and three brothers, Charlie Turner, Timmy McCarty, and Victor McCarty.

19th Annual Paul Anderson Youth Home Bike Ride
The 19th Annual Paul Anderson Youth Home Bike Ride is July 13-19, and several young men are ready to bike more than 550 miles starting and ending at the PAYH in Vidalia, Ga. “The training has been hard, but they take good care of us. This has been the first time that I have ridden on a real road bike, and this is going to be a challenge. When you hit a big hill, you are tempted to quit. When you see others around you stopping it can make you want to join them, but you must stay focused and keep pushing through.” Bike Rider Michael said.
Mary Frazier McLean Park
If you’re one of the few Hazlehurst residents who knows who Mary Frazier McLean was, then you’re in the minority. During last week’s May meeting of the Hazlehurst City Council, Hazlehurst resident Glenn Harris says that while Mary Frazier McLean Community Park has existed for several years, few in the community know who she was. She was Harris’s aunt, his mother’s sister, and was an educator who taught for 40 years in Hazlehurst and Jeff Davis County. She was married to Professor D.J. McLean, who worked for the Macon and Brunswick Railroad and attended the prestigious Fisk University in Nashville before teaching and overseeing one of Hazlehurst’s three historic Rosenwald schools.
Deacon A.C. McKever, 80
Deacon A. C. McKever was born July 16, 1944, in Hazlehurst to the late Mr. K. C. McKever and the late Mrs. Dessie M. Arnold McKever. He departed this life April 22 at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas after an extended illness. He was preceded in death by sisters Effie Howard, Vera McKever, Emma McKever, and brother Ellis McKever.
Mr. Paul Manning Temples, Vidalia
Mr. Paul Manning Temples, age 69, of Vidalia, died Saturday, July 6, 2024, at Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin, after a brief illness. He was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, briefly lived in Macon, and lived in Vidalia most of his life. He was a 1973 graduate of Vidalia High School and attended Georgia Southern in Statesboro. He was Stock Manager at TG&Y Department Store in Vidalia for twenty years, worked many years with Southland Cable in Vidalia, and worked with a contractor as a cable locator. He attended Vidalia Old Line Primitive Baptist Church. Paul enjoyed antiquing, camping, restoring antiques, fishing, yard work, and watching the Atlanta Braves, Georgia Bulldogs, wrestling, and NASCAR. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elder Manning Temples and Beatrice Taylor Temples; and a sister and brother-in-law, Myra Temples Soles and husband, Donnie Soles.
Mrs. Robena Durden Colson, Blue Ridge Community
Mrs. Robena Durden Colson, age 90, of the Blue Ridge Community, died Saturday, July 6, 2024, at Meadows Park Health & Rehab in Vidalia, following an extended illness. She was a native of Bulloch County and moved to Dublin at a young age. She moved to Warner Robins in 1953 and has lived in Toombs County since 1962. She was supervisor at Federal Pacific in Vidalia for twenty-one years and was a long-time member of Vidalia Old Line Primitive Baptist Church. She enjoyed Cooking, playing Bingo, and spending time with her family. She is preceded in death by her husband of sixty-seven years, Lester Colson; parents, James Inman Durden and Esther Lucindy Hodges Durden; one sister, Juanita Durden Huette; and two brothers, James Durden and Bloyce Durden.
Passage of City Ordinances Deferred Pending Public Input
The Chamber of the Vidalia City Council was filled Monday night with residents who believed several ordinances would be approved and passed by the members of the City Government. Those ordinances included guidelines on permits, long-term rentals and what most individuals came to voice or show their disapproval for was on how the city would address and oversee the unhoused population.

She was born February 2, 1968, in Swainsboro to the late Carlos Hall and Natalie Doye Hall. Madelyne was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Carlos Lyn Hall; sister, Debra Giles. To know Madelyn was to love her. Her sweet spirit and kind heart touched many. Madelyn was an incredible salesperson, spending her entire adult life in sales. Mr. Jimmy Wayne McGahee, New Branch Community
Mr. Jimmy Wayne McGahee, age 67, of the New Branch Community, died Friday, July 5, 2024, at Memorial Health Meadows Hospital in Vidalia, after a sudden illness. He was a native of Toombs County, living in Lyons most of his life, and in New Branch since 1993. He attended Lyons Senior High School. He worked with Fiber Optic Communications in Vidalia, Kennedy Cable in Reidsville for twenty-eight years, and was an over the road owner/operator truck driver for twenty-one years. He attended Mt. Moriah Church and Cedar Crossing Baptist Church. Jimmy was an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs, NASCAR, and he enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, and loved to operate any type of heavy equipment. He is preceded in death by his parents, Olan Jackson McGahee and Lulu Lavette Hines McGahee; and sister, Audrey Faye McGahee Kight. He loved his family and spending time with his friends.
Mr. Jack Harris Parson, Vidalia
Mr. Jack Harris Parson, age 92, of Vidalia, died Thursday, July 4, 2024, at the Community Hospice House in Vidalia, after a brief illness. He was a native of Coffee County, growing up in Nicholls, and later moved to Swainsboro. He was a 1948 graduate of Swainsboro High School, earned an Associate degree from Georgia Military College, and attended the University of Georgia. He lived in Swainsboro and Glennville before moving to Vidalia in the late 1960s. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was co-owner of Mid South Ford dealership in Glennville and co-owner and founder of Captain’s Corner Restaurant in Vidalia and later owned both. He founded the Seawinder Restaurant in 1979 and The Tree House in 1981. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Vidalia and the Caring and Sharing Sunday School Class. He enjoyed fishing, reading, and writing poetry. He is preceded in death by his wife, Martha Elizabeth Blizzard Parson; parents, Harris E. Parsons and Frances Gibson Parsons; and the grandmother who raised him, Hattie E. Busbee Gibson.
Rustin Retires After 25 Years at Southeastern Technical College
Director for Economic Development and Continuing Education Susan Rustin retired after twenty-five years of dedicated service to Southeastern Technical College (STC). While a student at Southeastern Technical College, receiving a Business Office Technology Diploma, Rustin began working for Southeastern Tech as a continuing education business and industry specialist. She assisted in coordinating classes, conferencing, and catering, served work-ready programs, coordinated leadership programs, hired instructors, and administrated proctored exams for industry certifications.
