DU QUOIN — Limb-different kids from across the country will descend upon Du Quoin this weekend for NubAbility’s All Sports Camp on July 18-21. The camp is for kids ages 4 to 17 with congenital or traumatic limb difference, frozen limb or highly mobile cerebral palsy. Campers will be paired with limb-different coaches and take part in up to 19 mainstream organized sports to help find their passion or talent.
Illinois dam fails after heavy rains and tornadoes sweep across state; hundreds told to evacuate
Storms with heavy rains and tornadoes rattled Illinois, overtopping a dam Tuesday in a southern part of the state and forcing hundreds to evacuate their homes. Water overtopped a dam near Nashville, Illinois, sending first responders to the flooded area to make sure everyone got out safely, officials said. There were no reports of injuries in the community of 3,000 southeast of St. Louis, but crews were sent to a home where a woman reported water up to her waist, said Alex Haglund, a spokesperson for the Washington County Emergency Management Agency.
Major highways clear of high waters, some secondary roads still flooded (5:45 pm update)
Most of the flooded streets in Salem have reopened after water levels receded following the heavy rains Tuesday morning. High water levels on Airport Road, West Whitaker Street, South Hotze. West Kell, and at the entrance and exit ramps on I-57 at West Main Street are down with no flooding at the present time. Earlier, the city got pumps working at the East Main Street underpass and were able to restore normal traffic flow.
Garner hired as new Rangers athletic director
BENTON — Former Sesser-Valier High School athlete and boys head basketball coach Shane Garner is the new athletic director for Benton Community High School. Garner replaces Ryan Miller, who will remain at the high school as assistant principal, where his focus will be on student attendance and behavior. Garner had served the last two years as Miller’s assistant AD and also taught strength and conditioning.
