Family and friends gathered together June 9 to share in a joyous occasion — Margie Moore’s 100th birthday.

Moore’s actual birthday was a few days earlier on June 6.

Moore said she is still here by the grace of God. She quoted passages from Ephesians 6:2-3, ““Honor your father and mother” – which is the first commandment with a promise – 3 “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

Moore recounted living on a farm and working in tobacco in her younger days and that she had worked hard all of her life, but trusted in God to get her and her family through the tough times.

Moore is better know as “Ma Margie” to most people in the community. Her wisdom, guidance and support is sought after on a regular basis.

“She has a quiet demeanor, but gives wise counsel to everyone she meets with a soft smile and a humble spirit,” according to Christa Herndon, associate minister of Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church.

More than 30 people filled the room with love and laughter as they shared stories about Moore. It was said she was a sharp shooter in her day as she taught her son how to shoot a rifle, while she taught her daughters how to cook.

Her children all said in their own way, they would not be who they are today without her strong sense of family and her loving, nurturing guidance.

“Moore has been a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church for over 50 years.  She has served faithfully as a Deaconess, Sunday School member and a member of the Senior Choir, where she has blessed us with her melodious voice. Her smile is radiant and she lives the life that she sings about.  She is currently the oldest member of Mount Vernon, where she holds the title of Church Mother,” according to Herndon.

“We are blessed to have Mother Margie in our church family, for she is a mentor, a role model and a God-fearing woman,” Herndon said.

Moore said, “It has not always been easy, as she had ridden out the storms of life with Jesus by her side.”

It’s not every day one can be a part of a 100th  birthday celebration.

Moore certainly looked to enjoy her special time in the spotlight.
