GRANITE FALLS, Wash. — The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office is asking for tips to help solve a cold-case double homicide that occurred 18 years ago. On July 11, 2006, a mother and daughter were hiking on Pinnacle Lake Trail east of Granite Falls and Verlot. They left their Seattle home early in the morning and were found shot dead on the trail later that day, according to the SCSO.

I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.

Gary Wayne Smith
Gary Wayne Smith passed peacefully from this world on the evening of July 5, 2024 after a brief stay at Whatcom Hospice. He lived a long and full life as a much-beloved son, brother, husband, and father. On October 18, 1934 he was the first of five children born to George and Hazel (Speirs) Smith, whose forebearers began to settle in Bellingham in 1968. He was followed by his brother, Grant, his sister Christa, and two more brothers, Glen and G. Winton.
