Community comes out to annual Concrete Youth Activity Day

Sue Ann Winn: October 8, 1949 – July 8, 2024
Sue Ann Winn, a long time resident of La Conner, passed away on July 8th, 2024 in Mt. Vernon, WA at the age of 74. Sue was born in Coupeville, WA, October 8, 1949, to parents “Deb” and Betty Ann Everett. She was raised in Oak Harbor, WA and graduated from Oak Harbor High School in 1967. She was always very social and loved being with her friends. Sue loved the water growing up and spent summers lifeguarding at the local pool. After graduating, she pursued many adventures in and around Seattle before settling her family in La Conner. Sue found her true passion while growing her family. Raising her two daughters in La Conner, she became a true “mom” to all. Her door was always open and she was happiest when her house was full. She was an amazing cook, an avid sports fan and a tireless volunteer in the school district. She held everyone to a high standard, and even taught a number of local kids to swim. Sue’s “family” expanded when she opened Punkin Patch Childcare. She loved the kids in her daycare like her own. She enjoyed helping parents and kids grow together. Her legacy of giving back to the community and loving everyone around her well will be carried on by those touched by her life. Sue is survived by her two daughters Jen (Tom) Faley of Coronado, CA and Stacy (Ja’wanne) Brown of Lacey, WA, her grandkids Zach (17) & Cooper (15) Faley and Grace (9) Brown; her sister Nancy (Frank) Hunter; nieces Jami (Mike) Lindberg, Bre (Kyle) Speck and their families and her beloved canine companion, Lilly. Sue is preceded in death by her parents, “Deb” & Betty Ann Everett.

Alligator spotted wandering around Snohomish County
In the wilderness that is Western Washington, one can see all manner of beasts, from Sasquatch to Olympic marmot to grizzly bear to … gator?. Portion of North Cascades Highway reopens as the “Easy Fire” continues to burn
EASY PASS, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A new wildfire forced part of the North Cascades Highway (Highway 20) to close on Thursday, July 18 but has recently reopened. The portion of Highway 20 between mile post 148 at Granite Creek and mile post 158 Rainy Pass Trailhead reopened at 4 p.m. It was previously closed because of a wildfire, named the Easy Fire, burning about half a mile from the roadway.

On top of losing two vessels, and temporarily a third, in one day on our Anacortes/San Juan Islands route to mechanical issues, we’ve seen an increase in crewing cancellations due to health-related relief requests and vacation leave. This temporary setback is difficult to digest, especially since we recently had our first week with no canceled sailings due to crewing since the pandemic began.

Job opening – Marine Mammal Stranding Network Program Specialist
The Port Townsend Marine Science Center holds a letter of authorization from NOAA Fisheries West Coast Region, to serve as the Marine Mammal Stranding Network (MMSN) coordinators for East Jefferson County on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington. In the summer of 2023, we experienced a significant increase in response calls for stranded harbor seals along the shores adjacent to Rat Island and Fort Flagler State Park on Marrowstone Island. With concerns related to the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 infected Caspian Terns, we plan to increase monitoring of these areas this year and do more outreach to the public about HPAI and what to do if you find a stranded marine mammal (call the MMSN).
Crabbing season returns to Whatcom County waters
BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Summer crabbing season is upon us as the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife announces rules and regulations for this summer. The season officially opens on July 18 for Bellingham and the San Juan Islands, lasting through Sept. 30 and crabbing is only allowed Thursdays through Mondays. Tuesdays and Wednesdays will be closed for all recreational crabbing.
