MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ - Thursdays during the summer add a little more color to the Mountainside Community Pool as pineapples, doughnut holes, and palm trees float across the water. A summer tradition since the 80’s the local pool has kept the community involved hosting weekly family float nights every Thursday.

Floats, typically not allowed in the pool, are welcome from 6-7:15 every Thursday during the summer season. Anywhere from 40-60 floats occupy the pool during float night and there is a constant rotation of lifeguards watching and monitoring the fun, according to Scott Laudati assistant pool manager.

“We really like float night because it’s silly fun, lots of interesting floats, good time with your family, " Erica Boeke, a Mountainside resident, said. “It just feels special because you get to break the rules a little bit.”

The regulations of float night are outlined before members and their guests get in the pool. The floats are permitted in the deep end but are required to stay out of the lap lanes and the shallow end, according Laudati.

The many moving parts leave the lifeguards with a lot to manage at once. They rotate shifts every 20 minutes and a walking guard is added allowing for close proximity to the pool while the patrons float around.

Many members bring their own floats to show off at the pool, but there is an option to rent them at the snack bar Off The Deep End. Patrons can pay five dollars for a float and if they return it at the end of the night they get three dollars back. The concession area also sells root beer floats contributing to the festive night.

“We encourage bringing appropriate floats. Not too big and cumbersome where they can't manage it, or it's too big to swim where we can't see the swimmer underneath, so we don't encourage giant floats,” Laudati said.

The Mountainside Pool will be hosting Carnival Night on July 25, which also happens to be a float night. Members and their guests can come and enjoy well floats until 7:15 as well as games and concessions until 9pm.
