Pillar of the Community
On July 4th, former Mower County Sheriff Terese Amazi was recognized for her significant contribution to public safety in the State of Minnesota and Mower County. Terese Amazi moved to Austin in 1998 and began a 30 year career working for the Mower County Sheriff's Department, first in the jail and later as an undercover narcotics detective. Deputy Amazi ran for the office of Mower County Sheriff in 2002 and became the first female elected as a county sheriff in the state of Minnesota. During her 16 year tenure as Sheriff, she led the building of the Mower County Justice Center, updated the department's radio communication system to 800 megahertz, implemented a prescription drug drop-off program and was named to the governor's task force for child protection. Sheriff Amazi was actively involved with the creation of the Seibel Center, advocating for the importance of a supervised visitation center in the community. At the ceremony, Amazi said, “It’s an honor and I want to thank you all for having me and electing me as your sheriff for 16 years,” Amazi said. “I can say that I truly miss the people, but I don’t miss the job.” She truly cared about the people she served. Her partnership, ability to communicate, and fellowship is dearly missed but we are all so grateful that we had her leadership.
