MUNCIE, Ind. — State Rep. Sue Errington has scheduled a town hall meeting for Friday, July 26, on plans by the Indiana Department of Education to restructure Indiana's high school diploma system.

The meeting, open to the public, will be 6-8 p.m. at Kennedy Library, 1700 W. McGalliard Road.

According to a release from Errington, a Muncie Democrat, the proposal calls for Indiana's high school diplomas to be designated solely as the "GPS Diploma" and "GPS Diploma Plus" starting with the Class of 2029.

"This would completely erase the General, Core 40, Core 40 with Academic Honors and the Core 40 with Technical Honors (diplomas)," the release said.

According to Errington, the changes would "reduce requirements for math, science, history, foreign language and health coursework and would require job shadowing or internships and apprenticeships, thus entirely restructuring high school education as we know it."

There would also be no academic honors diploma under the new plan, the release said.
