Jefferson School Lofts: Oskaloosa’s New Affordable Housing Initiative for Seniors
Oskaloosa, IA – The historic Jefferson School is set to embark on a new journey as it transforms into the Jefferson School Lofts, a significant affordable housing project dedicated to senior citizens. This development, spearheaded by Cottage Hill Development under the name North Arrow Development, will bring 42 Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) units to the community, providing much-needed affordable living options for residents aged 55 and older.
ARL holds a pet adoption special, asks for hot dogs, canned pumpkin, whipped cream and more as shelters remain crowded
Last week, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) asked for the public’s help because of a “severe space challenge” caused by a surge in dogs and cats arriving at its shelters. Over the weekend, it offered a special discount rate on adoptions of all dogs and cats six months or older, and 135 pets were adopted. Unfortunately, the space problem still exists, because while those adoptions were happening, 132 more pets arrived at ARL.
'Please celebrate responsibly': Des Moines officials report fireworks damage at 19 city parks
DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines Parks and Recreation officials continue to find fireworks damage and trash at local parks. City staffers found serious damage in the men's restroom at Riverview Park last weekend and, on Friday, shared photos of other fireworks issues on the Parks and Rec Facebook page.

3 crashes in Madison County, Saturday: 2 injured
(Winterset, Iowa) – Sheriff’s officials in Madison County said Sunday (today), there were three serious vehicle crashes Deputies and other first responders were called to, Saturday (July 6th). Authorities say at around 6:40pm, Madison County dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting (2) different crashes at the same time and in (2) different locations. Final preparations for RAGBRAI underway in Glenwood
(Glenwood) -- Tens of thousands of cyclists are expected to assemble in Glenwood later this month for the beginning of a week-long trek across the state. Like multiple KMAland communities, the city of Glenwood and Mills County Area Chamber of Commerce are making final preparations over the next two weeks to welcome cyclists for the 51st Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, or RAGBRAI. This year, Glenwood is the starting point for the over 430-mile trek, including over 18,300 feet of climb. Speaking on KMA's "Morning Line" program Friday morning, Mills County Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jennie Davis says nearly 20 committees comprised primarily of volunteers have been working over the past several months to plan the event and tidy up the city.
NEW Cooperative Donates to Greene Co Extension, Churdan Fire and Rescue
An agricultural company recently gave some donations to two Greene County organizations. Greene County ISU Extension received $3,700 from the NEW Cooperative Foundation to be used for 4-H enrollment fees. Extension 4-H and Youth Coordinator Samantha Hardaway says NEW Cooperative gave $20 per 4-H’er toward enrollment fees, while the other sponsors each gave $5 per 4-H’er, including Doug Hawn, Greene County Environmental Habitat Corporation and Greene County Corn Growers.
Perry man arrested Friday night for drunk driving with firearm
A Perry man was arrested Friday night for drunk driving with a pistol after law enforcement noticed the light on his license plate was burned out. Donald Carl Greenwood, 76, of 17656 H Ave., Perry, was charged with second-offense OWI and possession or carrying of dangerous weapons while under the influence and was issued a warning for improper registration plate lamp.

Perry man arrested after fleeing cops by car, on foot
A Perry man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after allegedly attempting to elude law enforcement. Eduardo Torres Aguilar, 30, of 1420 North St., Perry, was charged with eluding and interference with official acts and was issued citations for speeding, no valid driver’s license, no insurance, open container and failure to yield to emergency vehicle.
