I first joined The Oakland Post during the winter semester of my freshman year here at Oakland University. I had spent the duration of my first semester trailing behind the paper cart of my now best friend, a newly hired Post distributor, who let me go on her routes with her so we could talk about unimportant things and I could hang out in the office without actually being on staff.

Port Huron to Mackinac Race comes to an end
Sailboats are crossing the finish line up at Mackinac Island as the 100th Bayview Mackinac Race begins to wind down. The race got off to a slow start, being delayed nearly two hours Saturday due to lack of wind on lower Lake Huron. Wind conditions changed later in the day, giving a boost to some of the larger and faster boats in the race. The first to cross the finish line was Wizard in Class A shortly after 1pm Sunday. The leader for much of the race was Maverick, who also won the Chicago to Mackinac Race, but had to withdraw due to a mast failure. As of Monday morning, much of the fleet was in a line between Mackinac Island and Rogers City. The remaining boats are expected to finish Monday afternoon.

Ken’s brother, Donald, was born two years later, just days before Calvin died unexpectedly. Following Calvin’s death, Minnie and her sons moved back to her childhood home in Manchester, England for a few years before permanently emigrating to Detroit where she opened a boarding house. Ken graduated in 1939 from the High School of Commerce in Detroit, where he excelled on the baseball and basketball teams, and was named “All American Boy.” After graduating, Ken missed his tryout with the Detroit Tigers in order to enlist in the Army Air Forces as the US entered WWII. Ken served in General Eisenhower’s headquarters as a stenographer in Europe and North Africa. On May 15, 1942, Ken and Marie were married during a short leave in Wilmington, NC. When Ken returned from WWII, they moved into a house on Third Street in Rochester, MI where they lived for 62 years and raised their eight children. Very cute and the fish pattern seems appropriate for all the fresh, blue water nearby. Thank you for the special little surprise.
