CHESTERTOWN — For about a year now, Chestertown has been talking about getting a public restroom downtown as a permanent fixture. During the June 17 meeting, there was a unanimous decision to explore 300 Cannon St. as the place they’ll build, the site of the old Dunkin’ Donuts. Scientists identify toxin found in Chesapeake Bay phytoplankton
CAMBRIDGE — From a 60-year-old Karlodinium Veneficum (K. veneficum) culture kept at the U.K.’s Plymouth Laboratory, a research team led by the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science discovered the cause of the Chesapeake Bay’s fish kill, which was originally blamed on another phytoplankton, Pfiesteria piscicida. Center for Environmental Science researchers determined that Pfiesteria was not, in fact, the cause of the Bay’s fish-kill; rather, the karlotoxins found in K. veneficum were to blame. ...

ROCK HALL — Rowdy pirates and wenches from Baltimore, Pennsylvania, even Florida, in true buccaneer fashion, braved Tropical Storm Debby last weekend to travel to Rock Hall. BALTIMORE — Addressing the need for literacy proficiency in the state, Review and updates of the draft literacy policy were presented to the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) July 23. Centreville approves on-call policy trial period
CENTREVILLE — Seeking to ensure on-call employees are properly compensated, the Centreville Town Council approved a 60-day trial period of a new policy pending legal review and field validation. Centreville election canceled
CENTREVILLE — With only one candidate submitted by the time of filing deadline, the Centreville Town Council election for one council seat has been canceled, according to the town office. Sandy Huffer was the only candidate to submit by the close of the filing date Aug. 5, according to Town Clerk Gaye Adams. The candidate’s election certifications will be officially reviewed by the Board of Supervisors of Elections and the Ethics Commission to be presented along with reorganization at the council’s October meeting, Adams said.
