Arts Editor: A new twist in the search for a new Sarasota Players home
The saga of finding a new home for the Sarasota Players continues. The area’s oldest performing arts organization, which will begin its 95th season this fall, was talking with the city of Sarasota about taking over the Payne Park Auditorium. Realizing the building can not structurally support a theater, it proposed building a new, 17,000 square foot, two-story venue adjacent to it. But neighborhood association leaders and nearby residents raised objections to taking up more green space in Payne Park for another building.
Police investigating after shots fired incident in Sarasota
SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) -The Sarasota Police Department is investigating an incident near the intersection of University and Desoto. The roadway was shut down near Airport Circle after reports of a shooting in the area. Officers managed to find shell casings but no one remained on scene so police have no victims. They are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward to detectives.

New Bedford Day in Fort Myers, Florida Faces Big Changes
For 20 years, New Bedford snowbirds who winter in sunny Florida and those who've moved there permanently have gathered in Fort Myers to celebrate their hometown. New Bedford Day was founded in 2004 by former New Bedford Mayor Brian J. Lawler and his wife Johan. The Lawlers, recognizing the benefits of bringing hundreds of former New Bedfordites together to reminisce and renew old acquaintances, designated the second Tuesday in March as New Bedford Day.
Fisherman’s Village hits the market
Waterfront shopping and dining destination Fishermen’s Village went up for sale this week through a call offers process. The property was previously operated by Jonathan Larmore, who was removed from his control of the Punta Gorda property in favor of court-appointed PGFL Associates LLC, when it was placed in receivership in October 2023. SVN Commercial Partners was appointed to market Fishermen’s Village. To date, SVN Commercial Partners has sent out 80 requested nondisclosure agreements and received 35 executed documents in return. The 22.8-acre property includes 85,549 square feet of retail space, 47 hotel rooms, 116 wet slips and 604 parking spaces. The asking price wasn’t disclosed, but Punta Gorda City Attorney David Levin speculated during a March 20 City Council meeting that the asking price could be at least $30 million.
