CHICAGO (NEXSTAR) – The Democratic National Convention kicked off Monday night in Chicago with President Joe Biden taking the stage to pass the torch to his own Vice President Kamala Harris as the party tries to unite ahead of this November’s election.

Vice President Harris made a surprise appearance ahead of a speech to cap off the evening from President Biden.

“I want to kick us off by celebrating our incredible president, Joe Biden,” said Harris.

Harris appeared on stage to honor President Biden for his decades of service.

“Thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifetime of service to our nation and for all you will continue to do,” Harris said.

President Biden took the stage later calling for unity among his party and the country.

“We need to preserve our democracy. In 2024, we need you to vote,” said Biden.

The speech was both a look back to the president’s accomplishments and a call to move forward, fully endorsing his vice president to carry on his legacy.

“I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my career. But I gave my best to you,” said Biden.

The convention opened even as protestors gathered on the streets of Chicago and party leaders tried to rally their followers together.

“The future is here. It’s in our grasp. Let’s go win it,” said former presidential nominee and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Other Democratic heavy hitters are also teeing up for appearances, including the Obamas.
