SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – A new report conducted by MatressNextDay shows a Deep South state is the worst state in the Union for residents suffering from burnout.

In 2023, almost 2 million people searched on Google for “side hustles” in the United States, showing that a significant number of Americans are faced with having to work more than 40 hours a week. #hustleculture has more than 30 million video views on TikTok, and many Americans are beginning to feel exhausted.

The report placed Louisiana at the top of the list for people suffering from burnout than residents of any other state.

Rounding out the top three were West Virginia and Arkansas.

Louisiana residents work more hours a week, on average, than workers in other states. The state also has the third-highest cigarette use. More than 18% of Louisianians smoked in 2022.

Arkansas residents also had a high number of cigarette smokers.

Martin Seeley is the CEO of MattressNextDay, and he said that it’s easy to get swept up into hustle culture. But stats expose the states where people are pushing themselves too far when it comes to work.

“Stressing about work and how to strike the right work-life balance can ultimately have a detrimental impact on your sleep, which in turn can make the situation worse.”

Seeley said that over time, prolonged sleep deprivation can disrupt Circadian rhythms, which can negatively affect physical and mental health.

Sleep deprivation can also mess with your productivity, too. A reduction in 1.5 hours of sleep each night reduces your alertness by 32%.

Long-term sleep deprivation can also cause other serious health concerns, too, such as diabetes and heart disease.

The study looked at the average number of hours worked in each state, the number of people in the state that are employed, mental health issues, cigarette, use, the number of entrepreneurs, and the number of searches for “hustle culture.”
