RUSTON, La. ( KTVE/KARD ) – The Ruston Animal Control started it s new Sisters Saving Paws program, aiming to train, socialize, and showcase the dogs available for adoption.

The program is a collaboration between the Louisiana Tech University Panhellenic Council and the Ruston Animal Control. Members from each of the university’s five Panhellenic sororities visited the adoption facility, where they chose two dogs to sponsor or rush into their sorority. The creator of the program and a member of Phi Mu, Hailee Rivers, expressed her excitement to KTVE/KARD.

I already knew going into this that our girls would be perfect for this. They have very kind hearts and they’re extremely philanthropic and they love giving back to the community. So I knew it would be something that they’d would be excited about and it just makes me so excited also that they are so excited for something like this.

Another aspect of the program is that the orginizations can accumulate points for particpating in volunteer work such as bathing, walking or taking their chosen animal to events at Louisiana Tech University. Points can also be earned by raising funds to have the aniamls spayed or nuetured and by getting them adopted. KTVE/KARD spoke with members of the Tri Delta Sorority about their participation in Sisters Saving Paws.

One of our main goals was to come in and get some of the puppies that were the oldest in here. People always come into shelters and they’re like “Oh I want the cute puppy or the kitten,” and these older dogs that are over a year old almost never get adopted.

The orginizations began by sponsoring two animals each from the Ruston Animal Control. Once thier inital animals are adopted members of the orginizations will sponsor or rush another animal into thier sorority. The program will countinue over the course of the school year giving members of the sororities a constant opportunity to give back to the commumity.
