    Union County Circuit Clerk is resigning

    EL DORADO, Ark. ( KTVE/KARD ) — Current Union County Circuit Clerk Cherry Govan is resigning from her position. Govan has accepted a plea deal in court for her arrest on April 24th. Her resignation will go into effect on November 1st. Govan was arrested on felony counts of allegedly tampering with a public record and allegedly tampering with physical evidence according to the Union County Sheriff’s Department. KTVE/KARD spoke with Union County Judge Mike Loftin about the situation.

    Word, I got was there a there was a hearing before a judge yesterday, and she resigned, effective November the first. And that’s all I can tell you at this point.

    Loftin also spoke about what must be done to make the resignation official and the process for finding someone to replace her.

    Well, there will be there will be an ordinance before quorum court this month declaring a vacancy in the circuit clerk position. And there will also be an ordinance to appoint somebody to fill that position for the remainder of her term, which is the rest of this year and two more years.

    As long as Govan officially resigns on November 1st, all charges will be dropped.
