SHREVEPORT, La. ( KTAL/KMSS )—A recent study using data from the U.S. Census Business Builder has found that residents of seven Southern states spend less on home improvements than residents of almost all other states in the Union.

The study by Cinch Home Services analyzed how much people spend on kitchen remodels, roof replacements, home energy efficiency upgrades, and the cost of adding a bathroom to an existing home.

The cost of yearly home maintenance was not included in the study.

Results showed that Mississippi residents spent less per household on home improvements than residents of any other state.

Louisiana and Arkansas came in second and third on the list.

West Virginia, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Alabama, New Mexico, South Carolina, and Indiana rounded out the top ten states that spend the least on home improvements.

Data from 2023 was used to determine that Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas residents spend less on home improvements than residents of all other states.

A 2020 Gallup poll found that women make the majority of home decorating and design decisions. The pay gap between women’s and men’s earnings may contribute to the amount of money women can spend on home decor and design.

Lower levels of home ownership may also be a part of the problem. A spokesperson for Cinch Home Services said that renting limits a person’s ability to modify a home.
