Man arrested after violent attacks and freeway standoff in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, California — A man was arrested following a series of violent attacks and a freeway standoff in Sacramento, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office.At approximately 10:30 p.m. on August 14, 2024, Sacramento County Sheriff's North Patrol Deputies responded to a domestic violence report in the Arden-Arcade area. The victim reported being choked multiple times by her boyfriend, identified as 34-year-old Robert Zimbelman. The victim was transported to the hospital, and deputies began their investigation to locate Zimbelman.Just after midnight on August 15, deputies responded to a gas station on the 3400 block of Fair Oaks Boulevard regarding a stabbing incident. They found an adult male suffering from severe injuries after being stabbed in the stomach and face. The victim was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive.Investigators determined that Zimbelman had rammed his vehicle into the victim's vehicle before stabbing him multiple times and fleeing the scene in a blue car. Deputies alerted neighboring law enforcement agencies about Zimbelman and his vehicle description.At approximately 4 a.m., officers from the Fairfield Police Department located Zimbelman in his vehicle. He led them and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) on a vehicle pursuit before crashing near Jefferson Boulevard and Highway 50 in Yolo County. Zimbelman fled on foot and threatened to jump from the Jefferson Boulevard overpass. CHP Crisis Negotiators convinced him to surrender peacefully, and he was taken into custody without further incident.Zimbelman was transported to a local hospital for medical clearance before being booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on multiple felony charges. He is being held on $150,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on August 19.
