High School Huddle Camp Tour: BFA St. Albans Bobwhites

ST. ALBANS, VT – It’s a new era for BFA- St. Albans football.

“We’re kind of redefining the culture and what it means to be a Bobwhite football player,” said new Bobwhites head coach Kris Sabourin.

Longtime head coach Geoff Murray stepped down following last season making way for a new leader, but a familiar face in the community as Sabourin enters the fray. Sabourin is a former all-state quarterback for BFA- St. Albans and has coached a local youth program since 2018.

“He’s a great coach. He pushes us really hard. Our program has already gotten way better,” said wide receiver and cornerback Wilder Mudgett. “I can feel us becoming more of a family. And I think we have a good chance this year at winning some games.”

Winning hasn’t been easy for the Division I Bobwhites recently. The team has four wins combined over the last two seasons, but each victory came against DII opponents.

These Bobwhites are trying to put those days in the rearview mirror.

“We’re no longer comparing ourselves to the DII teams or the lower DI teams,” said Sabourin. “We’re striving to be the top three teams in DI. And we have to start acting like it.”

So how will they get there?

“I think it will be the discipline that coach Sabourin is putting on the team and the program and how much effort he wants out of us,” said Jonas Wagner, a running back and linebacker.

“Lack of effort’s a big thing in high school athletics and we’re trying to curve that,” said Sabourin. “We’re tackling as a team, we’re playing defense as a team and we’re all doing our job on Friday nights.”

BFA- St. Albans has never won a state title. Losing several stars to graduation headlined by QB Seneca Durocher won’t make that climb any easier, but their mindset and new leadership has them on the right track.

“I think we have a chance this year, and definitely have a big chance next year. I think Sabo is going to make a huge difference with the coaching,” said Mudgett.

“We’re not looking to be the best team in week one, but we’re definitely looking to be the best team in week ten. So wherever the seedings go, no one is gonna want to play us at the end of the season,” said Sabourin.
