HINESBURG, VT – Every year, the CVU Redhawks stick out as one of the powerhouses of Division I. 2024 is no different. The Burlington Free Press has them ranked number one in their power rankings and several teams across the state say the Redhawks are circled on their schedule.

“It’s a motivator. Pure and simple it’s a motivator,” said head coach Rahn Fleming. “I honestly am not that fond of it. But since it’s so, what we do is we use it to try and motivate and prepare and inspire the boys. They’re coming for us, we better be ready.”

Dylan Terricciano agrees. “I think we’ve earned it these last couple years, but it’s not a name to talk about if we don’t prove it,” said the inside linebacker/tight end.

“It’s a chip on our shoulder,” said Zane Martenis. “We didn’t have that last year. Undefeated teams don’t have that chip, they don’t have that extra bit of drive. And it’s going to make us all the better this year.”

This Redhawks team looks different. Notably, they graduated QB Ollie Cheer who shined under center for the Redhawks for a season and a half… Their new quarterback is just a sophomore…

“It’s a little bit scary, but I think I’m really ready for it,” said Orion Yates, on becoming the new quarterback. I bring size and I’ve got a good arm and I’ve just learned from Ollie who was an amazing quarterback how to play the position.”

“He’s a physical specimen, yes. He’s a super-intelligent kid. He is absolutely a teammates teammate. And super teachable. He wants to know how do I get better,” Fleming said, about Yates.

Fleming is impressed with his receiving core, running back room, and has retained nearly all of his defense from last season.

“We have I think 20 seniors of whom a good 15 or 18 are legitimately going to be on the ballfield. That senior presence is a big part of what’s going to make us as good or better than we’ve ever been.”

The Redhawks are home to start their season… They face Hartford on August 31.
