Rare weather setup brings summer back to the Northeast

A Rex Block is a weather pattern that was discovered in 1950 and introduced to us by Meteorologist Daniel Rex. This blocking pattern occurs when high pressure is located to the north of a low-pressure system.

That high protects from incoming disturbances while providing gorgeous weather that could last for days, weeks, or even months.

Meanwhile, it’s the opposite on the flip side of the blocking pattern. In association with the constant hovering of the low pressure, you typically find soggier, cooler conditions that could last for days on end or longer. This block only breaks when either the high or low changes intensity and throws the block out of balance.

Our setup showcases high pressure over the Northeast through AT LEAST next week. South of our high, the leftovers of tropical system Francine and other disturbances will be scooting on through.

While it will be rainier and cooler in the southern part of this blocking pattern, it will be sunnier and warmer on the northern end of it. Latest models are even indicating that our next best chance for widespread rain will not return until the end of this month.
