FORT MYERS, Florida — U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Barber has sentenced 29-year-old Angel Gabriel Hernandez, of LaBelle, to two years in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

According to court documents, on August 9, 2023, Hernandez unlawfully possessed a loaded Beretta handgun, which he sold to an undercover officer in a supermarket parking lot in LaBelle. As a convicted felon, Hernandez is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition under federal law.

This case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Simon Eth.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that brings together all levels of law enforcement and communities to reduce violent crime and gun violence. The Department of Justice launched a violent crime reduction strategy on May 26, 2021, to strengthen PSN based on principles such as fostering trust in communities, supporting community-based violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
