Canyon Police increases staff, technology
The Canyon Police Department has increased from 27 to 29 full-time staff members with the addition of two new School Resource Officers. The two new SRO's will be placed at Spring Canyon Elementary and Canyon Intermediate School starting in the 2024-2025 school year. CPD is proud to grow its partnership with Canyon ISD through the addition of new SRO's to increase police presence in the schools. The numbers below reflect the 2023 calendar year. Calls were up, but Part 1 crimes (robbery, assault, rape and burglary) were down. The Animal Control went through a change in July 2023 with a uniformed officer being named as the new Animal Control Officer. This officer has increased Animal Control's social media presence and overall reporting as indicated through the numbers reported. Be sure to follow the Animal Control in Canyon on Facebook at City of Canyon Animal Control in case your furry friend ever gets lost.

By Nell Williams Canyon News Correspondent When the new Walmart was approved in 2003, many people objected to having another Blue Box store going in. Canyon Fire Department eyeing new changes
With recent prairie fires sweeping the northeast Panhandle, a lot of attention is on fire departments everywhere, including Canyon. The Canyon Fire Department is facing growing pains just like the rest of the City services. Communities are growing and spreading out and the area has still been experiencing dry weather. “The current volunteer staffing situation began in 2022 with 23 volunteer members and six recruits. We are ending the year (2022) with 19 volunteer members and two recruits. Ideally, we would need 18 firefighter on each shift but a minimum of 15. We still can’t pull out our ladder truck. We added three recruits and we need nine to give us 15,” said Dennis Gwyn, City of Canyon Fire Chief. After a recruiting drive was launched, CFD ended up with 19 full-time firefighters and 19 volunteers, with 10 recruits in training.
