Mom allegedly leaves kids at SC hotel pool. It happened on same day 11-year-old drowned

A mother who allegedly left her three children alone at a hotel pool for “an extended period of time” was arrested by Myrtle Beach Police.

The incident happened on July 20, 2024 - the same day that an 11-year-old drowned in North Myrtle Beach.

Amber Soberg, 33, was charged with three counts of child neglect, indecent exposure and public intoxication, according to a Myrtle Beach Police arrest report.

On Saturday, an employee at Captain’s Quarters , 901 S. Ocean Blvd., said they noticed three children playing at the pool unsupervised, according to the police report. Upon speaking with security, they figured out which room the kids were staying in and knocked on the door.

The police report did not state the ages of the children.

Soberg answered and staff advised her to “collect” her kids, the report said. The Ohio woman later came down to the pool wearing a see-through shirt and no pants or underwear, according to the report.

She took the kids to her hotel room and a welfare check was called. Officers showed up and found Soberg intoxicated and unable to tell police how long the children had been in the pool.

She was arrested and brought to the Myrtle Beach Jail, where she is no longer being held. Her bail was paid on Sunday, court records show.

The same day of the incident, Serenity Evans, an 11-year-old on vacation from Georgia, was pulled from a pool at The Links in North Myrtle Beach. She passed away July 21 from injuries sustained from the drowning.

There have been a total of four child drownings in Myrtle Beach in July , with three happening over Fourth of July weekend, according to The Sun News.
