Ill. (WTVO) — A new report claims gun sales increased in Illinois last year despite Illinois tightening gun laws.

According to a report from security company, Safehome, gun sales increased around 5% from 2022 to 2023. It is estimated nearly 505,000 firearms were sold during that time.

In January 2023, Governor JB Pritzker signed the Protect Illinois Communities Act which banned assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

The company said the data comes from the FBI’s national instant criminal background check system.

North Carolina, New Hampshire and Florida also had higher gun sales. North Carolina’s sales went up 112% because of a new law where people no longer need a permit to buy.
