SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has signed a law that allows residents to have a digital driver’s license on their smartphone.

With the law’s signing, Illinois becomes the 12th state to allow the technology.

The digital driver’s license will not replace physical driver’s licenses, which must be presented upon request to a state agent or law enforcement, but will act as a convenient companion.

In a statement, Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said, “We can implement mobile IDs in a manner that ensures our roads are safe and that the privacy of Illinoisians is protected while still providing law enforcement, businesses, and medical professionals the information they require.”

The state can charge a maximum of $6 for a smartphone application that registers the digital ID or driver’s license.

Illinois would join the states Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, and Utah, which already allow digital IDs.

The law goes into effect on January 1st, 2025.
