ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — While many businesses and restaurants will be celebrating Rockford Day (“815 Day”) with specials on Thursday, the Rockford Rescue Mission is hoping people will donate toilet paper.

The Rescue Mission, located at 715 W. State Street, says it needs more than 18,000 rolls of toilet paper each year to house and serve the homeless.

Reaching its “815 Day” goal would help it reach half of that goal, the Mission said.

Donations can be made two ways:

    1. Order online from any retailer and have your donation shipped directly to Rockford Rescue Mission, 715 West State St., Rockford, IL 61102.
    2. Drop toilet paper off at the Mission any time between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“815 Day” is celebrated annually on August 15th, in honor of the region’s 815 telephone area code.

The Mission is also giving away free admission to the Winnebago County Fair, in Pecatonica, in exchange for two non-expired canned goods at the gate.

“We so appreciate our generous community,” said Sherry Pitney, Rockford Rescue Mission CEO. “These two drives in August help carry us through a very busy season with some basic needs.”
