BELVIDERE, Ill. (WTVO) — The Belvidere Baby Bank gave away thousands of diapers to families in the community and surrounding areas on Wednesday.

“It’s nice to know that there’s someone out for underprivileged families,” said Parent Stan Moffitt.

The Baby Bank has had multiple months of in a row that they were able to supply these many diapers. This effectively eases the burden of rising diaper prices for hundreds of parents.

“The need is just growing every single month because WIC does not cover diapers or wipes,” said Baby Bank Executive Director Mandy Minson. “So, with the prices of everything going up, these people really are in need just for basic necessities for their children. And they’re not asking for above and beyond. They just want diapers and wipes to keep their kids.”

The bank is fully funded on donations from churches, United Way, the community and more organizations. They also hold a pop-up shop with free baby clothing, toys and other child necessities.

Every month’s handouts are wrapped up with a free dinner.

“We got a big family, so it’s sometimes it’s always hard to do stuff,” said Moffitt. “So, it’s just nice that people out here help out and just make sure everyone gets some sort of meal.”

“We buy stuff and give it away and people can’t believe we give it away,” said Baby Bank Treasurer Bob Kantner. “These people are very grateful. A lot of young mothers, about a third, are grandmothers that are taking care of kids. So, it’s a very emotional thing.”

The Baby Bank has been distributing diapers since 2018. Since moving to Zion Lutheran Church in Belvidere last year, they have skyrocketed to giving away thousands of diapers.

“I mean, last year our demand was up 58% over the year before talking about people needing diapers, up 58% this year, year to date were up 34%,” said Kantner. “So, the demand is going through the roof because the cost is going through the roof.”
