BELVIDERE, Ill. (WTVO) — Firefighters from Boone County worked to extinguish a trolley bus on fire on Interstate 90 near Belvidere on Wednesday night.

According to the Boone County Fire Protection District #2, firefighters were called to the scene around 11:06 p.m., near mile marker 27, and found heavy smoke coming from the vehicle, which became engulfed in flames along the side of the roadway.

The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes, utilizing approximately 2,800 gallons of water from a fire engine that held a maximum of 3,000 gallons.

There are no fire hydrants lining the interstate.

The trolley bus was thought to be manufactured in the 2010s and is owned by a private company, according to Fire Chief Brian Kunce.

The fire is believed to have started in the rear of the vehicle, where the engine is located.

The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and managed to escape uninjured.

This country feels, like many others, that ELECTRIC vehicles are the way of the future. Can you imagine, in rush hour, a larger vehicle like this catching fire with bumper to bumper traffic and trying to get that much water to the source in a timely manner? There would be need for emergency vehicle lanes next to each lane of traffic to load that much water up and dispense it as not to have it spread.Unless, someone comes up with a solution which will work faster and use less material, is environmentally friendly, and also inexpensive to make. Awwwww, gasoline vehicles remain popular for so many reasons.
