ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — If you received a notification from the National Weather Service on Tuesday, issuing a Cold Weather Advisory and warning of wind chills between 20 to 25 degrees below zero, you’re not alone.

The alert was issued around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday to smart devices across Illinois, saying a Cold Weather Advisory would be in effect from 9 p.m. Tuesday to 10 a.m. Sunday.

The National Weather Service in Chicago later said the alert was sent in error.

According to the NWS Chicago, “We have found out that people are being alerted to a Cold Weather Advisory for this afternoon (9/3/24) and evening. This advisory is not valid and we are currently investigating its issuance.”

Temperatures for the week are expected to reach a high of 84° on Thursday and a low of 44° on Saturday.

Illinois Storm Chasers said the error was due to a new product being implemented for the winter.
