Sterling teen faces multiple charges after running from police while armed

STERLING, Ill. (WTVO) — Leland Stephenson, 18, was arrested Tuesday after running from police and was later found to be armed.

According to Sterling Police, around 10:25 p.m. officers attempted to stop Stephenson and identify him, but he ran.

Authorities said he was apprehended a short time later and a handgun was found in his possession.

He is being charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Possession of a Firearm without a Firearm Owners Identification, Illegal Possession of Alcoholic Liquor, and Resisting Arrest.

He is being held in the Whiteside County Jail.

Authorities stressed that Stephenson is not the teen who apparently shot himself in the leg and crashed a stolen car into a fence at Sterling High School earlier Tuesday morning.
