Ill. (WTVO) — Gone are the days when you could count on mini plastic bottles of body wash and shampoo to be available in hotels across Illinois.

Governor J.B. Pritzker recently signed the Small Single-Use Plastic Bottle Act into law , which bans hotels from providing various toiletries that come in plastic bottles.

For hotels with more than 50 rooms, the law will be enforced starting July 1, 2025. Hotels with under 50 rooms must abide by the law beginning July 1, 2026.

Hotels will be expected to switch to refillable containers and could face warnings if they fail to do so. Another failure to comply will result in a $1,500 fine.

The law does state that a hotel can still provide plastic bottles of personal-care products at no charge, but the person must ask for them at a place other than a room or restroom.
