SOUTH BEND, IN (WTVO/WQRF) — Northern Illinois University’s football program sent ripples throughout the nation in 2012 when it participated in the Orange Bowl crashing the big bowl games. Now NIU has struck again.

The Huskies stunned 5th ranked Notre Dame Saturday afternoon on the Fighting Irish’ home field 16-14. The Huskies got a game-winning field goal from Kanon Woodill with 31 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

The is the first time that NIU or any Mid-American Conference football team has ever defeated a top five ranked team. The Huskies had 102 yards more of offense than Notre Dame had (388-286). The Huskies also won the turnover battle 2-0 by intercepting Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard twice.
