SOUTH BEND, IN (WTVO/WQRF) — Northern Illinois University’s historic upset of Notre Dame Saturday couldn’t have happened if someone hadn’t scheduled that game. That someone was NIU Vice President and Director of Athletics Sean T. Frazier.

Frazier got Notre Dame to agree to the game several years ago. Frazier saw it as an opportunity to help boost NIU’s profile, not to mention add a nice little $1.4M payday for NIU for agreeing to travel to South Bend.

When the final seconds ticketed off the clock Saturday in NIU’s 16-14 victory over the Fighting Irish, Frazier was as emotional as anyone was who pulling for the Huskies.

Frazier spent a few minutes with me after the game describing what that outcome means to him and to the university, and he reflected on the time he made it a goal to schedule this game.
