Ill. (WTVO) — The state of Illinois has awarded more than $6 million in funding to four recipients through the Home Illinois Workforce Pilot Program.

The goal of the two-and-a-half-year program is to support the homeless by boosting job opportunities, helping them establish financial stability and improving their ability to afford permanent housing.

“We’re fighting homelessness in Illinois with compassion, innovation and coordination,” said Governor Pritzker. “My administration is one step closer to reaching our goal of functional zero homelessness by providing residents with the resources they need.”

The grants will go to organizations in Chicago, Pekin and Greenup.

I volunteered for a while at an organization to help the homeless. Meaningful siccess is very difficult. The problem is that the overwhelming majority of homeless people are schizophrenics, drug addicts or alcoholics. The alcoholics can sometimes be helped, but they have to want to do it. There is a very low chance that the drug addicts can be rehabilitated, but it's not impossible. The schizophrenics need to be institutionalized, sometimes against their will, as there is no cure and their meds need to be monitored.
