DEKALB, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — The honors keep rolling in for Northern Illinois University’s football team on the heels of their upset of Notre Dame last Saturday. On Tuesday, defensive tackle Devonte O’Malley got a big one.

O’Malley was named the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week. The Football Writers Association of America pick that award winner. O’Malley was a monster up front against Notre Dame. He had two sacks, three tackles for loss, and he forced a fumble.

O’Malley is the first NIU player to be named National Player of the Week since 2007 when Larry English won it.

I spoke with O’Malley at Huskie Stadium Tuesday afternoon about the honor and the Notre Dame win. To view that interview, watch the media player above.
