When does Daylight Saving Time 2024 end in Illinois?

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — With summer on the wane, it will soon be time for the annual ritual of setting your clocks to “fall back” at the end of Daylight Saving Time.

Daylight Saving Time in 2024 began on Sunday, March 10th, at 2 a.m. It will end on Sunday, November 3rd, at 2 a.m.

While connected devices such as your phone, smartwatch, and TVs will likely reset on their own, some appliances, such as your oven, microwave, or coffee maker, will need you to manually change the time.

Although many people believe that Daylight Saving Time is intended to give farmers extra time to tend to their fields, it actually has to do with “energy conservation and a desire to match daylight hours to the times when most people are awake,” according to History .

In 1974, former President Nixon signed a bill to make daylight saving time permanent for two years in an effort to combat the gas shortage. The move, however, was so disliked by the public that nine months later, former President Ford enacted legislation that restored the twice-a-year tradition.

Only two states, Hawaii and Arizona, observe standard time all year ’round, due to the abundance of daylight.

EDITOR’S NOTE: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated Daylight Saving Time ended on March 3rd.
