ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford medical volunteers are returning home after providing training and aid to Ukraine.

Ukraine has been at war since Russia invaded in February 2022.

Two Mercyhealth employees joined a team of medical experts for a weeks-long training mission where they provided hazardous materials training to Ukrainian first responders and health professionals.

The training included how to identify dangerous substances, diagnose exposure, and medical treatment.

Jonathan Walters acted as the security coordinator for the trip.

“They were fully engaged with this material, from the highest levels, to the lowest levels within the (State Emergency Services) and within the hospital,” he said. “I felt like we found family over there. Which is kinds of weird say. But, I’m glad we did it. So, the whole thing was rewarding. I keep saying this is the most rewarding event in my professional career. And I can’t wait until we’re doing it again.”

Since February 2023, Ukrainian authorities have documented more than 4,000 cases of Russian troops using munitions loaded with hazardous chemicals.
