ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — UW Health is investigating after an issue was discovered with sterilized surgical equipment at SwedishAmerican Hospital.

According to a spokesperson, hard water residue was found on some sterilized equipment on Wednesday.

Hard water contains calcium or magnesium, which can form deposits that can trap microbes and prevent them from being removed during sterilization.

“While we know the issue is not infectious and does not present a safety risk, some procedures are being rescheduled. Impacted patients will be contacted directly by their care team. We truly appreciate our patients’ and their families’ patience as we work to resolve the issue,” the hospital said in a release.
