Freeport’s community responds to shooting that injured 3

FREEPORT, Ill. (WTVO) — Community members said it was another sad day in Freeport after gun violence sent three victims to area hospitals on Wednesday.

Freeport police arrived at the scene to investigate a shots fired incident on Caroll Avenue. Those who live nearby said this type of gun violence is worrisome for families.

“It’s hard to think about how am I going to keep my family protected when you never know what’s happening just up the street,” said Michelle Griggs.

City of Freeport 5th Ward Alderwoman Cecelia Stacy said community support is vital during these times.

“If you have information, be forthcoming with [it],” said Stacy. “I know people are concerned, you know, about snitching but it’s time we took control of our streets. If we don’t, then who?”

High Hope Freeport is a non-profit run by William Brown and his wife. The upcoming weekend they are hosting a celebration of life block party to remember gun violence victims and offer resources.

“And we [are] dealing with the loved ones that we’ve lost. And most [of the] time is just grieving,” said Executive Director William Brown. “So, when we say celebration of life, that is to celebrate what they meant to our families, to our community. The times they made you smile, the times that they made you laugh, the impact that they had.”

Brown hopes events like these can help prevent crimes like today.

“It is always unfortunate when gun violence is involved. But if you have trauma… go talk to [someone] or be able to de-escalate a situation where they don’t think the only recourse is the results of gun violence,” said Brown.
